Shaniqua Bascombe and Safiya John were golden for Trinidad and Tobago at the Truman Bodden Complex here in George Town, Cayman Islands, late on Sunday, the second day of the 2019 Carifta Games. Bascombe bolted to victory in the Girls Under-17 200 metres final, while John finished strong for a runaway triumph in the Girls Open heptathlon.
Bascombe produced a powerful run on the straight, stopping the clock at a personal best 23.36 seconds for a comfortable win. Jamaica’s Brianna Lyston and Vincentian Ulanda Lewis claimed silver and bronze, respectively, clocking 23.53 and 24.09. Bascombe’s T&T teammate, Taejha Badal was sixth in 24.61.
On Saturday, Bascombe seized silver in the 100m final. After that race, she promised half-lap gold. The Cougars sprinter delivered, and now has three individual Carifta medals to her name, having earned 200m silver at the 2018 Games.
