KESHORN WALCOTT struck gold at the Tampere Games in Finland, yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete topping the men’s javelin field with an 82.32 metres throw. Latvia’s Gatis Cakss finished a close second with an 82.16m effort, while third spot went to Finland’s Toni Kuusela (80.06m).
Walcott opened the competition at 81 metres flat, and then threw 80.26 in round two. On his third attempt, the 2012 Olympic champion landed the spear 82.32m to snatch the lead from Cakss. Walcott fouled his last three throws, but stayed in front to secure his third title in Finland this season.
On May 30, Walcott won in Kuortane, and followed up with victory in Virrat on June 6. But his best 2019 showing to date came at the June 11 Paavo Nurmi Games IAAF World Challenge meet in Turku, Finland, where he bagged bronze with a season’s best effort of 86.09m. Walcott is the national record holder at 90.16.
