La Rose opens T&T medal quest

Local table-tennis player Dennis La Rose will be first in action for T&T at the Parapan American Games in Peru on Thursday.

La Rose will open against Daniel Rodriguez of Argentina in Group C of the men's singles class five at Sports Centre Three at the National Sporting Village in Lima.

The other national athletes competing at the Games are field athlete Akeem Stewart, sprinter Nyoshia Cain, discus thrower Carlos Greene and swimmer Shanntol Ince.

Stewart is a favourite to reach the podium after having won double gold at London 2017. The Tobago-born athlete set new F43 world records in both the javelin and shot put on his way to victory at last year's World Championships.

Stewart nabbed two gold medals at the Parapan event in Toronto, Canada, setting what were then new F43 world records in the javelin (53.36m) and discus (63.03m).

At Stewart's first Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro the following year he clinched gold in the javelin F44 as well as silver in the discus F44.

A total of 617 gold and silver and 679 bronze medals will be up for grabs at the Parapan American Games, which opens tomorrow (Friday) gain highlighting the beauty of the host country.

According to the organisers, the Lima Games will feature a record 1,850 athletes who will compete in 17 sports, two more than Toronto 2015, overtaking the latter as the biggest Parapan Games to date.
