RAE-ANN Serville and Tamia Badal were among the medal winners for TT yesterday with both sealing bronze the 400m and 400m hurdles events, respectively, in an otherwise underwhelming second day of action at the Carifta Track and Field Championships day two, in the Cayman Islands.

Badal was the first medallist yesterday, placing third in the women's Under-20 400m hurdles. She clocked 1:01.34, behind Jamaican pair, gold medal winner Shaquena Foote (58.05) and Johnelle Thomas (58.77).

In the women's U-20 400m final, Serville got the bronze in 54.18 seconds, behind Foote of Jamaica, who won in a Carifta U-17 record breaking time of 52.63 seconds.

The men's open octathlon was completed last night with Anson Moses sitting fourth, trailing the bronze medal position by just 40 points with just the 1500m run to wrap up the event.

Meanwhile, Safiya John and Antonia Sealy were both within reaching distance of the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the women's open outdoor heptathlon, with both athletes having just the 800m left to close their account.

Xea Bruce, the lone TT runner in the Under-17 women's 400m hurdles, finished fourth in 1:09.77. Rinaldo Moore placed sixth in the men's equivalent in 56.22 seconds.

On Saturday night, Akila Lewis and Shaniqua Bascombe picked up a silver medals in the women's U-20 and U-17 100m final, respectively, for TT.

Lewis closed in 11.62 seconds, behind Jamaica's Brianna Williams, who set a new Carifta U-17 record, in 11.25 seconds, while Bascombe clocked 11.72 seconds, behind Bahamian race winner Anthaya Charlton (11.51). Bascombe's team-mate Taeja Badal placed fourth, clocking 12 seconds.

The meet will continue this morning with all eyes on Tyriq Horsford in the men's Under-20 javelin.

At press time, TT remained well off leaders Jamaica, the Bahamas and Guyana in medal count with just one gold medal recorded by then.
