Hislop clocks pb at New Mexico Classic

T&T's Akanni Hislop ran a personal best (pb)of 6.71 seconds in the men's 60 metres, to take the top collegiate spot and finish second overall at the University of New Mexico Collegiate Classic at the Albuquerque Convention Centre, in the United States yesterday.

The Louisiana State University (LSU) junior finished behind professional Eric Cray of the Philippines, who won in 6.67 on the second day of the meet.

Hislop surpassed his previous best of 6.74, he achieved in winning his qualifying heat at the UAB Vulcan Invite held at The CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama in his season opener. The Tobago-native came later equalled the mark to win the final. Hislop entered the season with a pb of 6.83 set two years ago.

The day before, Hislop also registered a personal best of 20.92 in the men's 200m, finishing behind his schoolmate Jaron Flournoy in 20.63 in the timed finals.

Hislop's LSU teammate Xavier Mulugata also competed in both events. The junior athlete placed 19th overall in the half-lap in 22.53 and was 13th in the dash in 7.03. 

T&T's Zakiya Denoon was also successful on the weekend, winning gold in the women's 60m at the LSU Bayou Bengal in Baton Rouge on Friday. The LSU senior raced across the line in a time of 7.49. She advanced to the final with the third fastest qualifying time of 7.60.

At the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York, Akanni's brother Ako returned the track in two events but did not place among the top finishers.

The Fairleigh Dickinson freshman placed fifth in the men's 60m in 7.06. He progressed from the preliminary round with eighth quickest time after placing third in heat three with 7.04.

Hislop also lined-up in the 200m and placed second in heat two of time finals, finishing 19th overall with a 23.24-clocking.

In Lexington, Kentucky at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, Dwight St Hillaire of the University of Kentucky just missed out on a medal in the men's 200m. The sophomore clocked 21.18.
