Keshorn Walcott finds form

…throws over 83 metres for gold in Finland

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 18.06.2018

Keshorn Walcott went well past the 80-metre mark in only his second meet this season, the 2012 Olympic men's javelin champion landing the spear 83.25 metres for victory at the Aktia Star Games in Raasepori, Finland, on Sunday.

Walcott opened the competition with the big 83.25 effort. He fouled his next two throws. The Toco field athlete then produced a 79.46m throw in the fourth round, before fouling in rounds five and six. But Walcott had done the required work early on, and claimed his second javelin title in as many 2018 outings. On June 7, the Trinidad and Tobago throwing star threw 78.58m for victory at a meet in Aanekoski, Finland.

On Sunday, Oliver Helander threatened Walcott's lead, the Finn getting up to 82.05m in the fifth round. But Helander was more than a metre short of his T&T rival's mark, and then fouled in round six as he bid to knock Walcott off the top of the podium.
