Carifta 2018 gold medallists, Avindale Smith, Tyriq Horsford, Talena Murray and Veayon Joseph are all listed to compete at the NGC/NAAA National Junior Track and Field Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, this weekend.
Smith is the Carifta Games boys' under-17 400 metres champion, and will compete is this event at Junior Champs today. The field will also include Jordan Pope, Malachi Heywood, Saeed Pompey and Andrew Bravo. Smith, however, is expected to have things all his own way, with the others battling for the minor medals.
Smith's Abilene Wildcats teammate, Shakeem McKay is another of the standout athletes who will be on show at Junior Champs. McKay will run in today's boys' under-17 100m event. Cougars sprinter Shaniqua Bascombe is the favourite for girls' under-17 100m gold. And in the girls' under-17 400m, Rae-Anne Serville of Memphis Pioneers should take the top spot.
The Zenith Tobago trio of Horsford, Murray and Joseph struck javelin gold at the 2018 Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas.
For Horsford, the Easter weekend boys' under-20 triumph was his fourth straight Carifta success. The talented teen should have no problems capturing gold at Junior Champs tomorrow.
In today's girls' under-20 javelin, Carifta champ Murray will have worthy challengers in Zenith teammates Kymoi Noray and Asha James. Noray bagged bronze in Nassau, while James is back home following a successful campaign for Florida International University (FIU) on the American collegiate circuit.
